Did you ever think about the relationship between personal branding in your business life and personal branding in your social/dating life?
Your personal brand is all about:
(a) how you present yourself to the world, and
(b) how others perceive you.
Those 2 things will have oh so much impact on your social/dating life and the types of people you attract. Your own personal brand will be obvious to others in how you act, communicate, and behave, whether consciously or subconsciously.
But even before you have the opportunity to interact with someone you don't already know, your social media and dating profiles, including the PHOTOGRAPHS you choose to place in your profiles, are already communicating your personal brand. Not getting the results you'd been hoping for? Melanie Schilling, dating coach and psychologist, suggests that you take the time to DEFINE YOUR BRAND and then COMMUNICATE YOUR BRAND.
DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL BRAND
Choose three words to capture the essence of your personal brand:
Word #1 - your greatest value (the thing that, if missing, would make life meaningless; the thing that guides your actions; the thing that defines you; the thing that matters most to you in the world)
Word #2 - your lifestyle preference (How do you like to live? Do you prefer to sit at home or travel the world? Do you work hard, play hard, or both? Do you lead a healthy living lifestyle, a religious lifestyle, an adventurous lifestyle, or some other kind of lifestyle?)
Word #3 - your personality style (introverted, extroverted, comic, friendly? Pick a word that is a strength as opposed to a weakness.)
COMMUNICATE YOUR PERSONAL BRAND
Written - Weave your 3 words throughout the text of your social media and/or dating profiles. Make sure that all your written communication - e-mails, text messages, instant messages - are all consistent with your brand.
Visual - Remove photographs from your social media and/or dating profiles that don't reflect your personal brand. Get new photographs that DO communicate your personal brand.
Verbal - When you speak with people - whether prospective dates, work colleagues, or friends - make sure that what you SAY is consistent with your personal brand. Even better, think of a story from your life that depicts your three brand words in action, and tell these stories on your first date.
Non-Verbal - I think this one is the hardest. 90% of communication is non-verbal so make sure that your body language aligns with your personal brand. Check out Vanessa Van Edwards - the body language expert - for more on body language.
CASE STUDY - VISUAL COMMUNICATION OF YOUR PERSONAL BRAND
Lynn (pictured below) values creativity. She likes to frequent art galleries and artistic venues and enjoys independent films and documentaries. I knew she would love the creativity and uniqueness of the dating portrait below.
Lynn also describes herself as a formidable, multifacted woman... confident with a strong and vibrant personality. Her dress style spans elegant sophistication and vintage feminine to modern casual. Don't the dating portraits both above and below fit that description?

"We have been trying to find a professional photographer to re-take our portraits who's both affordable and offers the type of portrait photography that we like," Kory said. "We're not traditional people, but we like traditional portraits."
Last time they had done a session with a professional portrait photographer, it was for their parents and grandparents. This time, the primary purpose was for them to decorate the walls of their home. And so, Kory & Geoffrey chose a traditional grey studio backdrop for their petite, 30-minute portrait photography session, and away we went! Enjoy some of my favorites of their couple's portraits, and check back for a future blog post with photos of their printed artwork!

"We have 3-month old twin boys, and we’re interested in a baby photography/family photography session,” Pat told me. “Fall is my favorite time of the year,” she continued, “but I’m not sure if it will be too cold for the kids."
When I asked about her past experience with professional family photographers, she mentioned a family photography session for her nephew at JC Penny Portraits. “They were ok,” she said, “but rushed and not so personal.” They had also done maternity photography and hospital photography after the twins’ arrival, “but this time, I really want someone who will be more personal and patient, and who will allow wardrobe changes,” she said.
Well, fall is without question a wonderful time of year for outdoor family portraits, and not usually too cold even for little ones. So one fall evening, we met up at Sugarloaf, Maryland in Dickerson, MD for a leisurely walk on the wooded mountain trails. The twins were already able to push themselves up for short periods of time, and we captured so much variety in their little baby expressions. Pat & Jack will treasure these baby photography & family photography memories for years to come, as will the twins when they grow older. These family portraits are truly a legacy to be cherished for generations.

"I don't have any good photos of myself, so I'm hoping to get some online dating profile photos that look more natural and less staged," John said.
John wasn't a fan of cold weather, so he chose our Clarksburg, Maryland photography studio as the setting for his online dating photography session. Check out his final selects and the awesome review of our dating profile photography services that he wrote on NextDoor!
