Envision, if you will, the graceful dance of time as it bestows upon Karen the honor of reaching a 60th year of age. In the tapestry of existence, this juncture is a symphony of experiences, a tableau of triumphs and tribulations interwoven into the very fabric of your being. Yet, amidst the ebbs and flows of life's journey, how does one capture the essence of such a profound moment?  Karen captured it by participating in Round 2 of our 50 Over 50 & Fabulous photography project –  an ode to sophistication and a celebration befitting 50 women age 50+.

At its core, this photography session transcends the mere act of capturing images; it is a visual narrative that pays homage to the chapters of Karen’s life's opus. Each frame is a brushstroke painting the portrait of her soul, imbued with the hues of laughter, love, and legacy.

In a world enamored with fleeting youth, a portrait photography session at age 50+ stands as a testament to the allure of grace and refinement. It is a declaration of self-assurance, a reverie in which the passage of time is not feared but revered. Embrace each line etched upon your countenance, for they are the delicate threads weaving the tapestry of your journey… a testament to a life lived with dignity and poise.

The 50 Over 50 photography session also serves as a means to embrace metamorphosis – turning 60 is not merely a reflection on the past but a contemplation of the future, an affirmation of the infinite possibilities that lie ahead. Whether in solitary contemplation or amidst the embrace of loved ones, it is a moment to revel in the splendor of the present while casting an eager gaze towards the horizon.

Yet, perhaps the pièce de résistance lies in the creation of enduring memories – timeless treasures to be cherished for generations to come. In an era marked by the ephemeral, printed photographs serve as tangible relics of affection, encapsulating the essence of a moment in perpetuity. Each image, years from now, shall be a portal to a bygone era, a testament to a life well-lived and love well-shared.

Thus, if you find you have achieved this illustrious milestone, consider joining our 50 Over 50 & Fabulous photography project. It is not merely a commemoration of years gone by but a celebration of the timeless elegance and enduring legacy of a woman of distinction. So, step into the limelight, exude an aura of grace, and let the lens immortalize the exquisite tapestry of your existence.

KAREN'S WORDS OF WISDOM

Q: Start by telling me who you are, where you’re from, how old you are now, what you do for a living…

I am Karen Smith, Washington, DC native.  I am married with three adult sons and five grandchildren. I am 59 years old, and God Blessing (will be 60 in January).  I worked for the Department of Defense for about 40 + years as an Administrator Officer, Human Resources Manager, and Equal Employment Opportunity Consultant.

Q: How did you mark turning 50 and how did that feel?

Age 50 was been great for me.  I did not see it coming.  The only change I recognized was gaining some weight.  Time really flies.

Q: Have your values changed over time?  What do you value now?

My values never changed.  I always believe in treating others with respect. Take care of you and your family.  I am very family oriented and enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends.  Work hard, and live a Christian lifestyle.  Love helping others reach their professional and personal goals.  Loyal to my friends and co-workers.

Q: What have been some significant points of change in your life so far… how did these change you?

Losing family members can be devasting.   My Mom, Dad, Brother, and Step Father were everything to me.  My mom was my best friend and advisor.  She played a big role in my life.  A big chunk has been taken from me.  I know I have to stay focused on self, current family members, and life events to sustain.

Q: What is the one piece of advice you would give to your 20-something self?

Have love and respect for self. Use good judgement for decision making. Don’t rush into things. Work hard and continue to learn and grow. Stay out of trouble and find some really good mentors who may have a positive impact.

Q: What's your favorite bucket list-type thing that you've done?

I love hanging out at the beach for peace of mind.  It relaxes me.  I have been to the Bahamas, Aruba, Dominican Republic, and St. Thomas, where I have seen blue turquoise water. Would love to go to Paris.

Q: How have your ambitions changed since you turned 50?

Even over 50, I believe there is still so much to learn and so much to still see in life.

Q: Are there any myths you would like to bust about the over 50s?

Being 50+ is not old.  You do not stop living and look your best.  You must stay active more then ever and take care of self.

Q: What do you want men to know about women who are 50+?

I want men to know that women over 50 can be wise, very charming, fun to be with, and make great loving companions.

Q: Have your perceptions of what being 'attractive' means changed over time? What do you define as attractive now?

Being healthy and fit is attractive to me.  I have gained so much weight over the years.  I believe if I lose the weight, I would look more attractive, healthy and fit.  I have always loved fashion and dress to impress.

Q: What made you decide to participate in the 50 Over 50 & Fabulous Project?

I was invited by my friend, Cynthia, to attend the Inaugural 50 Over 50 & Fabulous Project Gala a few summers ago, and I was very amazed and  impressed with Irene, the photographer’s, work.  The 50 Over 50 & Fabulous Project looks like fun and I believe this project will inspire women over 50 to feel and look their very best.
