Tati's Confidence-Building Portrait Photography Journey

In a world saturated with filtered images and airbrushed perfection, the journey to self-confidence can be a daunting one for tween and teen girls.

As they navigate through the tumultuous years of adolescence, they can often feel the toll on self-esteem that societal pressures and unrealistic beauty standards take from them.

In such a landscape, the power of professional portrait photography emerges as a transformative tool, offering a unique avenue for these budding young women to explore and embrace their own beauty.

Featured here is Tati, a 10^th grade teen at the time of her teen portrait photography session. Exceptionally talented at golf, a big sister to her young niece, and a volunteer to the homeless through a DC soup kitchen, Tati is an accomplished young lady with short and long-term goals to the future honed over the years through vision-boarding with her loving mom’s assistance.

I got to know and photograph this Upper Marlboro teen and her family indoors at our Maryland photography studio and outdoors at Lake Needwood in Gaithersburg, MD. As a participant in our “Confident Girls, Empowered Women” project, and as we journeyed together through the portrait photography experience, my appreciation of her kindness, generosity, and love of life blossomed, just as she blossomed in front of the camera. I feel humbled and honored to have taken part in Tati’s self-awareness journey, as I know she will achieve amazing things through the course of her life. To Tati!

The Importance of Feeling Beautiful

Feeling beautiful is not merely about adhering to a particular standard of physical appearance; it's about owning and celebrating one's unique qualities. For teen and tween girls, this journey towards self-acceptance is often hindered by a barrage of external influences—from glossy magazines to social media feeds—dictating what beauty should look like.
